FORMBRIM FIELD NOTES / DESIGN GUIDE

Wide-brim visor: the buying guide

A wide-brim visor needs more than a front view to establish coverage. Projection, side width and curve all matter, and the band must be reviewed with that larger brim attached. Describe the intended worn shape and packing behavior separately from any protective performance requirement.

NOTE 01

Brim projection

Show the brim from above and in profile. Agree the intended projection and side coverage through a worn reference.

Mark projection from an agreed point at the band and show the visor from above. A wide-looking photograph may result from camera angle rather than a larger pattern. Check side coverage on the intended wearer and note whether the edge interrupts the desired field of view during ordinary use.

NOTE 02

Band balance

Review the band and adjustment with the larger brim in place. The complete item should sit as intended during normal handling.

Review where the band sits with the full brim in place, then operate the rear adjustment. If the visor tips, identify the position and setting used before requesting a change. A tighter strap is not automatically the right answer. Keep the complete assembled sample as the reference for the balance you want.

NOTE 03

Edge finish

Confirm how the brim edge is finished and where the artwork belongs. Keep the band readable without forcing an oversized logo.

Specify whether the edge has binding or another finish and inspect both sides of the curve. Locate the artwork on the actual band area rather than scaling it to the larger brim. A broader visor does not create more vertical room for a logo above it.

NOTE 04

Packing and functional requirements

Discuss packaging and any intended folding behavior separately. A broad brim does not establish UV protection, and flexibility is not proof of packability.

If folding is important, describe the intended method and review the sample after that handling. Flexibility alone does not prove recovery. Likewise, a broad brim is not evidence of a UV rating. Define any functional claim separately and establish the necessary specification and evidence before using it commercially.

NOTE 05

A practical buying example

A buyer wants more forward coverage than a standard sport visor but the same shallow band. Compare the proposed projection on a wearer with the band at a consistent position. If the new brim affects balance, review the assembled construction. Do not approve coverage from a flat top view and assume that the wearing experience is unchanged.

NOTE 06

Questions to settle before requesting a sample

Choose this format when the open crown and wider visor are both wanted. Ask how projection and side coverage are measured, what packing method is proposed and whether folding is actually required. Compare an all-around sun hat when rear coverage is part of the brief; a visor cannot provide a crown or rear brim.
